One of the largest pork companies in Canada is no longer owned by Manitobans. Today, HyLife announced it has sold 50.1 percent of its shares to Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CPF) — a company based in Thailand. Itochu, a Japanese firm, will continue to own 49.9 percent of HyLife.

HyLife of La Broquerie has sold its Canadian shares. It was announced this morning that Charoen Pokphand Foods, or CPF, of Thailand, acquired 50.1 percent of the company for $498 million. The remaining portion continues to be held by Japanese partners.

The assets going to HyLife in that deal include a boar stud operation and 37,000 sows in 12 sow barns, along with six nursery and six finishing barns producing up to a million hogs per year, employing 252 people.
